Introduction

The field of Metaplanar physics is a well-studied specialisation that has brought many great advances to the Institutional Society and the Commonwealth of Hallifax. A notable exception to this is the sub-field of Void Physics: apart from the research performed by L. Letara et al (unpublished results) all knowledge concerning this field is pre-second coming. Correct application of Void Technology has already brought several significant technological advances to the Institutional Society and helped elucidate our understanding of the complementing fields of Metaplanar physics and Astrophysics (L. Letara et all, unpublished results). As such, it is important for our understanding of reality to further our understanding concerning the laws that govern the Void and bestow its properties. This study aims to address these issues.

Witness accounts and historic studies have shown Elder Deities to be capable of transversing into the void at will. If possible, this study aims to duplicate this feat.

Goal

1. To further our understanding of the Laws and Properties of the Void.
1b. Use obtained insights to manipulate void matter into the Prime Plane.
1c. Translocate objects into the void.

18:30 – Summary of day results. No earlier comments because of complete lack of result in attempting to freeze the void sphere present within the laboratory. The void is completely unaffected by conventional techniques for lowering temperature.

Initial conductive methods of temperature regulation are completely ineffective. No conventional substance appears capable of conducting to or from the void (attempts made with oxygen, nitrogen, dihydrogenoxide, reaching temperatures as low as 50 degrees I). The problem appears to be that in order to conduct, the void has to touch for transfer of energy to take place, however, direct contact causes an immediate fission of substance(M) back to energy(E). The wards in place around the void prevent this from happening. No energy appears conductible through the wards. This means that unless the wards are malfunctioning (parameters normal, so unlikely) void has a very low innate conductivity, i.e. charges do not easily transfer into the void. This is a likely hypothesis, based on the theory that the void has no contents, there is nothing within the void to take the energy conducted from the outside.

More advanced methods of energy regulation (harmonic vibrations through ethereal, temporal, planar and domothean frequencies) produced no noticeable temperature shifts within the void sphere. Interestingly, the vibrations are capable of breaching the void sphere and perhaps causing reactions inside, this is unknown at this point, however, no difference of state or ‘freezing’ was achieved. It stands to reason that in order for something to freeze, it needs to consist of a substance that has the ability to phase change. Void appears to lack this ability. It is unclear what technique L. Letara et al have used to stabilise the void for transport, as they described.

8:30 – continuation of study: Manipulation of void by use of domothean vibrations.

A marginal successful result. Manipulation of void by domothean vibrations is relatively straightforward. The domothean vibrations seem incompatible with the void, they actively repel one-another. This means that pressure of domothean energy on one side of the sphere distorts the round shape. This of course is hardly news as the wards that contain the void within this laboratory function on the basis of these very same vibrations. If it didn’t work, I wouldn’t be here asking these questions, after all!

11:00 – Small update. It appears the amount of distortion created does not equally relate to the amount of energy or pressure put into the vibration. Letara et al observed a similar concept, linking it to the volume of the sphere, rather than its surface area. Further testing will have to confirm this.

17:00 – It appears that the amount of energy is directly related to the shape of the energy as well as the amount of energy. As such, it is a simple matter of dimensions that determines the amount of distortion in relation to the amount of energy. I.e. if you’re using a two-dimensional shape to press into a three-dimensional shape, the two-dimensional shape is at a severe disadvantage. If you even out these variables, the scales are linear in size, or if they are not, the amount of pressure inequality is conversely proportional to the difference in power between the dimensions of the two shapes.

Today has proved rather interesting. It seems that domothean energy repels nothingness, but does not attempt to fill it. That is, when other vibrations, masses or energies (technically the same thing, as per R. Eepex et al, pre-second coming of Commonwealth) enter the void, they dissipate, conceivably in an attempt to fill the nothingness. Domothean energy appears resistant to this, it retains its integrity and while it pushes back the void, it seems unable (or unwilling?) to fill it.

8:30 – Commence phase 2 of study: Analysing basic properties of the void sphere.

14:15 – Ran every diagnostic test from the book. According to all data, the void simply isn’t there. There is no heat, sound, radiation, light, scent, matter or pressure reading from where I can clearly see the sphere. In fact, the only thing I can register is the absence of certain things. I register an absence of light, sound, heat, radiation and scent in the location of the sphere. Normally there are always background readings picked up from other sources behind or close to the object being read, but in this case there is nothing. Just a deathly and unnerving silence. I measure standard barometric pressure around the sphere, most likely created by the domothean wards that stabilise the void, after all, mass is one of the main things the wards should hold off, otherwise, it would probably absorb all the air in the laboratory. Now wouldn’t that be awkward? I can see myself trying to explain that one to the Primus.

17:45 – Moving on to more complex diagnostic techniques, I have been able to expand on my initial findings. The additional tests all show the same however: absence. There is no temporal presence, no aetherial emanation, no planar reflection. The sphere simply does not register on any force or technology normally associated with the known multiverse.

20:20 – I can’t seem to put down my work tonight. I’ve moved on to harmonic vibrations as a logical step from the pre-readings. Initially the results were the same, there are no harmonic signatures for the Arcane, Temporal, Aethereal or Planar vibrations. The domothean readings for the sphere are present of course: the wards are domothean in nature and it is only natural that they should show up on my readings. What really puzzles me however is that there are no harmonic void emanations. This makes no sense, void is one of the six primary building blocks, we harvest their vibrations from Continuum. How can Continuum pick up the vibrations if the void is not producing any? Conceivably the domothean wards could be overpowering the more subtle, low vibrations that I would expect the void to generate. I really should call it a night, but I can’t seem to put this down. I’m just going to run a few more tests.

20:43 – NOTE TO SELF: DO NOT SET DOMOTHEAN VIBRATION TO LOWER THAN 5.4MHz! Nearly blew up the Yudh-damn building.

23:42 – Since I have managed to empirically establish that turning down the domothean vibrations is a bad idea (way to go, Fareneth) I’ve spent the last three hours trying to filter out the domothean vibrations from my readings using the logic crystals, but even amplified there is just nothing there that is in any way reminiscent of a void vibration. I’ve also compared the generated domothean vibration to the fingerprint templates in our database, and while it is a rather complex vibration, it does not show any signs of having been altered by absorbing other vibrations. How utterly unfathomable.

7:34 – Just woke up with my head glued to the input node of the logic crystal. Thank Yudhe none of my colleagues found me like that. I’d better go home and get some rest. I can’t for the life of me remember what I did yesterday after my last entry. Will start again tomorrow with a fresh head.

8:30 – Continuation of 322.7.19, attempting to find void harmonic vibrations coming from the sphere.

16:30 – Results of today: very little, other than the conviction that I am going mad. The readings I’m seeing don’t make any sense. The domothean vibrations are constant, though they fluctuate depending on the part of the sphere that requires most (for lack of a better word) counterpressure. I spent most of the day filtering out these fluctuations and analysing both what I had altered and the base line of the domothean vibration. That’s when things got a bit complicated. There are patterns in the fluctuations that appear like fingerprints, as in traces that something was there that altered the end-result, but I’m not seeing the input. At first I thought these were traces of the vibrations I’ve been looking for, but when I attempted to confirm my findings by actively looking for these patterns within the vibrations, the results were inconsistent and random. It’s like as soon as I started looking, the results changed. I can’t think of any logical way to explain this, I’ll give it some thought and see if I can’t work this out before I continue.

8:30 – Continuation of 322.7.21, attempting to explain erratic fingerprint patterns

13:30 – I think I’ve found the vibrations. That is, in some cases. I’ve been trying to look for where the vibrations are but since this morning I’ve been having much better luck by looking for where they aren’t. In some cases I now see patterns that must have been caused by raw void vibrations coming from the sphere, but as soon as I zone in on where they should be, there’s nothing there. It’s like I am just seeing their reaction. Also the patterns are still behaving inconsistently and erratically.

16:00 – I’ve isolated the wavepattern. It’s not really a vibration as we know it, but there’s something there. What’s been putting me off finding it is perhaps that I am too set in the physical laws of the multiverse: action and reaction, mass and energy. These patterns seem to conform to a different set of rules altogether: when I look at them, most of the time, they’re not there. Yet their effects have to be consistent, or the sphere wouldn’t function. Therefore I simply know that they are there, even if I can’t always prove it. It’s like seeking for them makes them disappear. Furthermore, there is still a fairly large inconsistency to the readings, leaving them a large measure of uncertainty. I’m beginning to feel like the sphere is messing with me. I need a break.

8:30 – Summary of Harmonic Void Vibrations.

1. The Void emanates no direct vibrations.
2. There are traces of void vibrations within the readings. Mostly hidden behind the domothean vibrations of the wards.
2a. The void vibrations are hard to measure, more easily found by where they are not than where they are.
2b. The void vibrations seem to actively hide when they are measured.
2c. The void vibrations display large amounts of inconsistency and uncertainty.

9:15 – I’ve decided to lay off on measuring the void vibrations for a while and return to it later. When stuck it pays to do something else. Hopefully the insights gathered in my future experiments will help me understand the results of these readings.

11:00 – I’ve started studying the interactions between the void and matter by guiding items through the wards into the void. I was immediately capable of reproducing the energy surges observed by Letara et al. I am not sure what to make of this, theoretically it should be impossible for nothing to create something. I’m going to see if I can obtain more accurate readings.

18:00 – Calling it a day. I’ve collected large amounts of data from different materials and amounts of materials. I will analyse them tomorrow.

8:30 – Analysing data gathered yesterday.

14:30 – I’ve analysed all the data and they are surprisingly consistent. The amount of energy is roughly related to the amount of matter guided into the void. Based on what I have seen of the void and its inconsistency, I am uncertain where the energy comes from. The energy appears whenever matter enters the void, after which the matter is never seen again. At the moment, due to my inability to see inside the void, I am uncertain what reaction is taking place. I am going to try and obtain some close surface analysis and perhaps some chronoinfinity measurements to see what’s happening at one point of time in detail.

21:12 – I am a Dunce! I’ve been looking at a fission reaction! It all makes sense now. I can’t believe I’ve been this stupid for the last two days. E=MC^2, when the matter enters the void, it falls into the vacuum of nothing and immediately splices into consecutively smaller components, all the way to atoms which split and fall into loose particles which in their turn dissipate into energy (with probably quite a few more steps in between, but one gets the picture). The amount of energy that comes free is simply gargantuan but most of this is immediately lost into the void, only a fraction of it somehow escapes the pull and comes free as the energy fluctuations that I have been measuring. Some quick preliminary calculations lead me to believe that only about 0.001% of the available energy finds its way into the prime plane, and I think we should be very grateful for that, otherwise, every time something touched the void, massive discharges of energy would tear most of the city apart! Anyway, a great note on which to end this most interesting day.

322.8.1

8:30 – I’ve been forced to spend some days on guild and family matters. Continuing with my research now.

8:50 – Cleaned up the leftovers from last month’s testing, attempting to get a closer look at what’s happening when matter touches the sphere now.

12:00 – I’ve been able to capture the fission reaction in my readings, confirming my theory described above. I’ve also been able to capture readings about the energy produced whereby I’ve been able to determine that it’s turbulence in the air which keeps all the energy from immediately falling into the void. Apparently the movement of the energy and air around the reaction distorts the distribution enough to make part of it escape into the room. There’s part of this process that doesn’t make sense though, but at the moment it’s eluding me, like one of those nagging thoughts. I know something is wrong but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

16:30 – I’ve spent most of the afternoon trying to use harmonic vibrations to have a closer look at what’s happening on the surface of the void and to look at the void that lies behind, but it appears that my looking at this interferes with the outcome. The sphere started acting erratically when I was viewing the process in this way, like it was sensing my attention and wished to conceal its secrets. Why, would you look at that, and here my wife was always criticising my lack of poetic feeling. (Editor’s note: Fareneth’s former wife contests the validity of this statement).

322.8.2

8:30 – Broadening my experiments to encompass harmonic vibrations.

14:15 – I’ve conducted a series of experiments where I attempted to feed harmonic vibrations into the void. I had hopes that they would penetrate and tell me something about the inside, I am simply dying to get some pressure, gravity and temperature readings from within the sphere. Sadly though, all the vibrations fell apart as soon as they touched the void in mostly the same way as the earlier experiments with matter. I’ve made some preliminary studies of what happens when the vibrations hit the sphere but most of it stays rather unclear to me at this point. I’ve been able to ascertain that with this experiment as well, small discharges of energy dissipate into the surrounding air, but they are almost too small to pick up in my readings.

19:50 – I’ve found out where the energy comes from, apparently the vibrations act like a particle on the sub-atomic level where the vibrations get transformed into energy. The amount of energy is so small because the vibrations have no mass to speak of. This could go a long way towards explaining some of my earlier findings, I’ll have to look into that at some point when I get to the end of this series of tests.

21:40 – Yes. I know. I should go home, stop judging me.

22:10 – I’ve attempted to use domothean vibrations to penetrate the sphere but they seem unable to do so. I am capable of forcing the vibrations into the sphere but the void recoils at its touch. I can use the vibrations to shape the void, but not to penetrate its endless depths. Manipulating the sphere creates some interesting power fluctuations however, further convincing me that the sphere does not want me to look inside.

322.8.3

7:10 – Hesitant to use void vibrations on the sphere. Putting it off for now.

9:54 – Been pushing the sphere with domothean vibrations. Depending on the force of my push, the reaction of the wards can be quite dramatic. I’m unsure if it’s responding to the domothean vibrations, to the distortions I am creating on the sphere, or some other power from inside the sphere that I haven’t touched on yet. The sphere naturally isn’t changing shape in other places when I push at it, after all, it has no mass, so there’s no need for it to expand out and compensate for lost volume.

11:11 – I’ve been eyeing my harmonic equipment and the void crystals therein. The answers lie within, I know, but am I ready to see and analyse these data? Perhaps I’ll postpone those experiments till another date.

15:47 – I’ve been re-analysing my data concerning the vibrations coming from the void. The data definitely suggests something, like an underlying pattern I just can’t seem to grasp. The domothean energy still suffuses all my readings though, making it impossible to see properly. Of course, I still don’t have new insight concerning these vibrations and why they are missing, so I am not quite sure why I expected this part of the research to suddenly make sense.

18:32 – I’ve prepped and calibrated the void crystals, optimizing their condition and making sure they will be running efficiently and cleanly for when I finally need them.

19:21 – To run a few tests and confirm optimal operating conditions I’ve taken a few readings from using the void harmonics on the wards that stabilise the void. The wards seem very sophisticated, they react directly to any pressure I place on them by enforcing that section of the energy signature, thereby assuring the stability of the sphere. Excellent craftsmanship.

23:17 – I am astonished. The results of the void vibration tests are, simply put, exhilarating. It all makes so much more sense now, why have I been putting this off for so long? The void sphere reacts to the vibrations in an almost organic manner. It simply resonates with potential when I push and prod at it with the harmonic void vibrations. How it is that nothing can respond in this way I am not entirely certain, but it is absolutely clear to me now that while the void may be emptiness in the purely natural definition, it simply cannot be empty in the Metaplanar physical definition. The first definition dictates that emptiness cannot react, yet, the void is perfect emptiness, it is what remains when everything is gone, the antithesis to the multiverse, the fabric that the world is painted on, the ink from which the darkness was drawn. In order for the void to react, there has to be some quantum of something in there. Particles that define emptiness. The particles from which the darkness is made. This is simply amazing, the implications are endless, they could shed a whole new light on our understanding of how reality works! This requires further study.

322.8.4

11:56 – This morning, a lot of things suddenly started making sense. First of all, the basic principles of harmonics dictate that matter equals energy, just in a different form. When energy is bound in waves, it becomes a particle and when that solidifies into state, it becomes matter. I.e. vibrations are a form of energy and matter both. Because harmonics taps into the six base vibrations of creation (Aethereal, Arcane, Planar, Temporal, Domothean and Void) they are basically solidified or energized reality. They are not reality itself. The void vibration is a distilment of the deeper, underlying vibration that is the actual void. Therefore, any raw vibrations coming off the void need not closely resemble the vibrations that I cast with my harmonic technology. It is an energized version of the underlying vibration adapted for use in our own multiverse, it conforms to our laws and expectations, while the actual void does not. The actual void is alien to our world, that’s why I was not able to see it, I was expecting something that conformed to our reality, like the void vibrations that I wield. Oh, how naïve and short-sighted!

16:03 – I’ve been using the void vibrations to distil out that which I cannot see. The sphere is all but forgotten, I must find the elusive vibrations that I have been seeking for almost half a month now. I can see the pattern react to the vibrations I am casting out, I hope that when I analyse all this, I will be able to fill in the blanks. I’ve got a good idea of what I’m looking for now, the gaps between the others. The silence that shouldn’t exist. The Darkness.

20:31 – I’ve found the non-existing vibration. It’s impossible in every way. It does not exist, because it is emptiness, and emptiness does not exist in this multiverse. Yet, its effects are everywhere, small distortions of the other vibrations as if stapled to the background of reality. A space that is not filled by any one of the five other vibrations is automatically filled by the void, even though in our reality al spaces are filled by these five. I’ve compiled my ratings into the supposed properties of the ‘prime’ void vibration, as I’ve taken to calling it, to distinguish it from the ‘harmonic’ void vibrations that I myself am using. The prime void vibration has an impossibly small and large amplitude, an infinitely variable phase and a negative angular frequency. By all accounts, it’s impossible, yet here it is, filling the non-existent space between the other vibrations with a quantum of nothing.

22:57 – The prime void is everywhere. What I was seeing did not come from the sphere. It underlies everything, pervades everything, it is everywhere. Lying on the edge of reality is the endless abyss of emptiness and nothingness. The Darkness Waits.

5:55 – I understand why the sphere was not sending out vibrations now, the answer is what it always was: it isn’t there. There is no sphere there, what I am seeing and interacting with is simply the absence made present by the removal of the other five vibrations. When all is gone, that is where the void waits. It’s like pulling back a curtain and revealing what is behind. I could not sense anything from the sphere because the physical space it is occupying in our multiverse is no different from any other. The sphere isn’t there. The sphere is everywhere. The Void is nowhere and everywhere.

7:43 – The vibrations are easy to spot now that I know what to look for, I believe that I understand how to recreate the circumstances that produced the sphere in the centre of this laboratory, at least on a basic level. Yet part of me feels there must be more to the sphere than this, even if at the moment I cannot feel or see it, there is something there, something more than simply the absence of the five vibrations. Something more intangible than that.

11:32 – I’ve returned to using the harmonic void vibrations on the prime void. Suddenly it’s very easy to see and understand the effects I’ve been using since I started my study of harmonics. It’s like my conscience and understanding have been lifted to a higher level. I know how the void works, how it behaves, I can predict the effects of my meddling and I can use my influence to twist the prime vibration directly. Given time, I should be able to manipulate these non-existing quantums into great projects.

16:11 – I was right. There is something more to the sphere. The prime vibration reacts differently here, it’s stronger. It seems fuller, more vibrant, more present. It’s like standing on the edge of the abyss, gazing out into the eternal darkness, directly into the void.

22:41 – It makes sense, the void is not there. The darkness sprawls out behind what I can determine inside the sphere. It extends endlessly but contains no space. It is everywhere at once but there is no time within the void. I can see it in the reactions of the sphere. It calls out, like a vacuum calls air, the void calls everything. The Void Hungers.

2:11 – The sphere is different. It almost feels like it is looking back when I probe it and manipulate it with my harmonic void vibrations. It is different but I cannot see how. I am missing something. I can see the influence, the quantum of nothing, the quantum of non-substance, made present in the void of nothing. It’s like the pallet of creation, infinite potential, like a quantum soup, from nothing must come something. It is logical, it is the only thing that could be. The Prime Void must be something, must contain something. Perhaps this is the essence of Yudhe? The underlying meaning of creation? What is it this sphere is made of? What is left when all else is removed?

2:14 – When did I last sleep? I cannot remember.

2:30 – The substance of nothing. Nothing made something. The quantum. The negative particles, the inverted vibration.

3:40 – I have seen the quantum. The harmonic vibrations pulled back the prime and revealed its depths.

5:62 – The quantum, it senses. It reacts, it waits. I can sense it, it pushes my vibrations back.

14:00 – The prime void is everywhere, the sphere is just the tear, the gap in the fabric. It extends beyond, endlessly, yet all in the same location. There is no location, no time, there is nothing, only the quantum. The quantum extends, it pervades. The cold darkness is the warmth of life, that is how it was. That is how it will be.

19:71 – I can see now how the quantum hides in every shadow. Where there is nothing there is the quantum, the void quantum. It extends everywhere where there is an absence of anything. It hungers. The quantum hungers.

23:21 – The void whispers, its conscience pervades the quantum and the quantum pervades everything. The void is nowhere so the quantum is everywhere. The void is deep and it hungers. Behind the darkness, in the depths, it waits, the conscience, the something that came from the nothing. The quantum was disturbed and gave rise to the first. Like a collective. Had Dynara known? Is this Yudhe? It cannot be, Yudhe is creation, Yudhe is beautiful. This is not beautiful.

24:43 – The shadows watch me. The quantum is in the shadows and it has detected my presence, my awareness. I can feel the quantum behind the sphere, behind the shadows, behind everything. How can we not have seen it before?

25:72 – The voice has been whispering inside my head. I do not wish to see, do not wish to hear. Yet I cannot escape it, the darkness, the emptiness, the void is everywhere. I can see its imagery, I can see the heart of the eternal darkness. The horrors that lurk in the emptiness that hides behind the multiverse. They are watching and waiting, biding their time, waiting for the circumstances that will give form to their potential, the spark that stirs the quantum and gives birth to their conscience. Theirs is a timeless world, they exist before their creation, they coax, they wish me to stir the quantum. Here lie the nightmares of mortals and gods alike, driven only by a primal feeling of hunger. The Void Hungers. The Void Waits and Hungers.

I am writing this from the comfort of my chair near the fire in the chambers of my wife-to-be in the Shevat mansion. My pipe and a lovely cup of tea are at hand and I have just had a most tremendous meal. In short, it does not get more comfortable than this.

Yet, even after more than three months, thinking about what happened and reading about it makes my crystal skin grow static and sends shivers of discomfort down my spine.

Apparently I was found several days after my last entry, by my colleague Fellow Ismbard Brunl. I was huddled in a corner, as far away from the sphere as I could get, and muttering to myself in a constant stream of unintelligible words. It took more than a month before the insanity was noticeably less and another one before I could safely be called sane again.

It’s now been about a month since then and I’ve finally been able to convince my physician that I am much improved, and allow me to finally begin pursuing my studies again. He is concerned by traces he sees in my diagnostic tests apparently, but I haven’t been talking to myself for nearly a fortnight now.

I’ve read my notes from beginning to end several times now, with varying periods of time in-between. It’s difficult to imagine that the ravings at the end were really written by me, yet, even scrawled as they are, it is evident that it is still my handwriting. My first impulse was to remove all the entries that were written after the onset of madness, however, it really isn’t that simple. I am having a hard time deciding where exactly the madness took hold, or even when the first signs cropped up. In retrospect, I can see tiny signs of laxness in my writing that I don’t usually allow in my professional writings. The logical conclusion then would be that the void started gripping my brain as soon as I started working on the sphere.

It is more difficult to determine where my slight eccentricity developed into full-blown madness. There seems to be a rather interesting pattern to my writings where splashes of raving are interrupted by brief moments of absolute lucidity where I draw some very interesting conclusions. It will be difficult to determine which is madness and which is genius.

In light of the reasoning described above, I’ve decided to leave all entries in this journal completely unaltered, including my increasingly impossible time- and date-notations. Many of these writings are a blend of madness and insight, and I expect to be able to distil many important discoveries from the things I experienced during my insanity. Furthermore, there may be passages that don’t directly mean something to me, but might just be that spark of inspiration for other scientists working on the same subject. For those reasons, these writings will remain as a testimony to the events. Furthermore, the writings in themselves offer a very interesting perspective into insanity for any psychoanalysts or neurobiologists interested in this subject.

Regardless, let me review the journal up to this point and attempt to distil some conclusions concerning that which transpired. First of all, it seems pretty clear that some kind of madness slowly found its way into my brain. This is not unheard of: exposure to higher planes of creation has been known to addle the brains of mortals. However, usually this influence is directly related to the presence of a Soulless. At present, there are no records providing information concerning the possible imprisonment of any of the last surviving Soulless within the void. All five are accounted for (some more objectively than others) and while there may be some discussion as to how or where exactly they are imprisoned, no histories or theories mention anything concerning the void. It seems unlikely then that a Soulless is directly responsible for this exposure-induced madness.

There are several possible explanations. First of all, the void is where the Soulless emerged from: not just the Five, but all of them. Since the void possesses neither time nor space, the madness that generally exists in the wake of these beings might still linger, even though their sources have long since disappeared. Alternatively, the void is a complex place, and the mortal brain is not designed to deal with visions and theories of this magnitude. Near the end, I apparently managed an understanding that allowed me to see directly into the void. In this way, my exposure fuelled my madness which fuelled my understanding which fuelled my madness in a sort of descending spiral. Likely, it was a combination of both these factors.

Regardless, the conclusion that prolonged exposure to the void leads to madness is hard to dispute for me at this point. I have arranged with my colleague, Fellow Ismbard Brunl, that he will be responsible for monitoring my sanity once I return to the laboratory to test the hypothesis that studying these texts is going to create. He will remain outside the laboratory and run a pre-scheduled recurring diagnostic, which he will use to create a schedule of work and rest that will hopefully be something my brain can cope with.

Tomorrow, I will once again take up my research by studying the texts and seeing what conclusions may be drawn from them. Once this process is complete, I shall return to the laboratory of the void to test these hypotheses.

Despite (or perhaps thanks to) my madness, this is quickly becoming one of the most interesting and exciting studies I have ever had the pleasure to be part of.

322.11.18

Reading passages from before invokes images of the time of their writing. They put me in mind of the things I witnessed and the realisations and epiphanies I experienced. Sadly, they also invoke the terror and hopelessness I felt, along with the spiralling decline of chaos that is madness. I’ve extensively studied the journal entries over the last couple of days and arrived at the following hypotheses.

1. The Void Exists where no other building blocks of creation exist. Since no such space naturally occurs in the multiverse, the void both does and doesn’t exist.

The prime void vibration is an impossible vibration that only exists by its effect on other vibrations. There is no room for the void to exist within the multiverse, but since the void encompasses no space, it actually exists everywhere. It is the underlying canvas that returns when the ‘paint’ of creation is removed.

2a. While the void contains nothing, it is not empty.

The void contains nothing in the purely metaplanar sense, however, the readings made during my studies have shown that it is not empty. The Void reacts to certain outside stimuli. True “nothing” cannot react: as such, the void cannot be empty.

2b. The void is filled with the ‘prime’ void vibration. A quantum of nothing.

Reality exists out of four prime building blocks (Aethereal, Arcane, Temporal, Planar), in combination with a fifth (Domothean). The ‘outside’ reality, the void, is filled with a sixth vibration, the Void vibration.

2c. Prime void vibrations do not conform to the natural laws of the multiverse.

The prime void vibration is not of this multiverse, as such, it conforms to different physical rules. These rules allow it to exist even though there is no room for it to do so. Because of this the vibration has characteristics that are incompatible with the known universe, which makes it impossible to see or influence the vibration with conventional physical technologies.

3. Since the void does not exist in the multiverse, that which is of the multiverse cannot interact with it.

While the first four corner stones of reality combine with the fifth to create the multiverse, the void stands completely outside this. As such, any substance which enters the void instantly falls back into its prime components, its quantum state. As such, the Void Hungers. It is currently unclear what happens to the substance when it falls into quantum state, presumably they become part of the void vibration in a way that is the inverse of the way in which the void vibration exists in our own world.

An interesting consequence of this is that of the mortal civilisations present within the basin today, only the institutional society possesses the technology to study, manipulate and harness the void in any meaningful and scientific way.

Please note that the domothean energy is exempt from this rule: Domothean and Void energy seem capable of repelling one-another.

4. The Void is nothing. Yet when stirred, it gives rise to something.

Since every action has an equal and opposing reaction, the void should theoretically be capable of expelling the matter it is capable of devouring. It seems logical that in a world filled only by the void, when the perfect emptiness encompasses all, any disturbance of this equilibrium would give rise to the four first cornerstones of reality.

5. The void sphere is not a presence, but an absence.

The void sphere present within the laboratory of the void is a point in space and time where the other five vibrations have been pulled away. Since nothing then occupied this space, it was filled with the void. Since the void has no space, the sphere isn’t actually there, its existence a paradox like only the existence of nothing can be.

6. A collection of void becomes a self-sustainable entity.

When all reality has been isolated and removed and the void comes into existence, it coagulates together and becomes a self-sustaining entity. That is to say, a portal into the endless nothing of the void. If left to contact our own reality, both entities would quickly collapse. It is unlikely that void can exist within the multiverse in a stable manner for any significant period of time. As such, a release of the sphere would likely cause a surge of energy, where the prime void vibration reaches out in a pulse. This pulse would cause anything it touches to revert to its quantum state and fall back into the void. However, since the void cannot exist where there is something, this reaction is non-sustainable and would be self-limiting.

7. Since the void contains nothing of this world, it is without Time or Space.

Space and Time are aspects of the multiverse, as such, they are direct consequences of the four cornerstones of creation. Since these do not exist within the void, there is neither time nor space in the void. This has wide-ranging and interesting consequences, such as the fact that without time, there can be no action or reaction, as such, everything in the void is theoretically happening at the same spot at the same time.

8. The void is a dangerous substance which causes insanity to the mortal mind.

Please read the previous pages. It explains this hypothesis better than any way I could put it to paper.

322.12.2

10:00 - It took some time before I was able to properly convince my physician of my sanity and to get him to allow me to resume my studies. I shall commence preparing my hypothesis tests in short intervals of time to minimise my exposure to the void. I am hopeful that I can still make good progress however.

14:00 - I’ve managed to perform several small readings which make hypothesis 1 sufficiently likely. There are traces of the prime void vibration wherever I turn my instruments. Using domothean energy to pull out part of the other vibrations causes small increases of the readings, but these bubbles are unstable and quickly filled up by the other vibrations. I can create slightly more stable bubbles using the void vibrations, but these behave very differently from anything I’ve seen of the void thus far. It seems that the harmonic void vibrations alter the way in which the void is harnessed, making it a different substance than the prime void I’ve been seeing. Perhaps more adapted to our multiverse.

322.12.4

10:00 – Preparing to study the void sphere in an attempt to clarify hypotheses 2 a, b and c.

10:30 – I’ve managed to confirm hypothesis 2a by proving that the void is not empty. The void reacts to my vibrations in ways that would be impossible if it wasn’t filled with something. I’ve further managed to calibrate the extent of the prime void vibration, making it likely that hypothesis 2b is at least partially true.

11:30 – Confirming hypothesis 2c was relatively easy, it’s very clear that the vibration which exists within the void conforms to none of the physical laws that govern the other vibrations.

14:00 – It’s clear that the only meaningful way to influence the void is through itself. Nothing I have attempted today (or in fact in the time of my studies before I started using harmonic void vibrations) managed to achieve manipulation of the void itself. Interestingly, that means that the contents of my studies will be useable by the Commonwealth (and more specifically the Institute) only and there’ll be no reason to classify its contents.

322.12.7

14:30 – I’ve attempted some small-scale experiments trying to recreate the desired effect for hypothesis 4, but it appears that this will have to remain a theory for now. I cannot adequately create a stable void that encompasses enough void matter to observe the genesis of matter. It seems likely that this is because of the multiverse, which disturbs the reach of the void to the point where it simply doesn’t possess enough nothingness to expand into in order to create matter.

322.12.8

12:00 – I’ve managed to prove that the void sphere present in the laboratory conforms to hypotheses 6 and probably 7, though I don’t think my fellow scientists would appreciate it if I disabled the wards in order to properly prove hypothesis 7.

15:30 – I’ve managed to obtain some readings that question the existence of time within the void sphere, but in order to really confirm this, I will need to obtain measurements from inside the void. This is something to store away for later use.

322.12.9

9:30 – I’ve decided to broaden the reach of my study and attempt to develop an item that can enter the void and perform readings for me from inside. Obtaining this would allow me to confirm many of the earlier defined hypotheses and probably formulate quite a few new ones.

16:30 – Spent the rest of the day drawing up some theoretical sketches based on my findings thus far. I am hoping the incorporation of domothean energy into an item will make it possible to create a vessel that is capable of entering the void without being destroyed by the quantum. I shall consider this further while on my recess.

322.12.12

8:30 – Apparently a brief period of convalescence nurtures the brain. I have managed to produce a few schematics that I intend to put to the test today.

11:00 – I’m using a joule sphere from the transphenortex grid as a base receptacle for my constructions. The spheres appear particularly good at storing energetic patterns or vibrations while being less valuable than more complex crystalline fabrications. In later stages when my initial testing is finished I will probably switch to more durable materials.

Regardless, as a test run, I’ve taken a sphere and encased it in a very basic domothean pattern before pushing it into the sphere. The results were disappointing but expected: the pattern did not hold under the ‘pressure’ of the quantum and the sphere was voided almost as soon as it touched the quantum. (I only just noticed that the joule spheres and the void sphere use the same noun, I’ll try not to be too confusing.)

14:00 – I’ve increased the complication of the domothean pattern quite extensively to multiple degrees, even going as far as a fifth power vibration pattern, but no matter what I do the pattern shatters as soon as it touches the void. I suspect the diffuse ‘pressure’ of the void destabilises the pattern, or at least enough to cause minute impurities within the pattern which are enough to cause the entirety of the system to collapse. I need to come up with something more stable.

15:30 – I’ve tried some variations in pattern embedding but without much luck.

322.12.13

8:30 – Continuing with pattern embedment.

10:00 – I’ve started weaving the pattern into the sphere, making the vibration a part of the sphere rather than just a sort of shield. This seems to work a lot better, though I am still quite a way from creating a lasting pattern. At least I don’t get half-broken spheres on the floors of the laboratory anymore, it was getting quite tiring doing all these mundane things like sweeping the floor.

15:30 – Naturally. The answer was so simple that I just didn’t think of it. This seems to be quite a recurring pattern in this research.

I’ve started augmenting the domothean vibrations with void vibrations: the domothean vibrations provide a direct protection from the quantum while the void vibration pushes and stabilises the pressure of the quantum around it. This creates a sustainable pattern which appears quite capable of entering the void sphere without suffering any negative effects.

15:45 – Uh. They’re not coming back out.

17:00 – I’ve tried a couple of variations of the pattern, thinking that maybe the problem was that the pattern degraded once entirely immersed within the quantum and I lost track of them. Not a single sphere has come back out though, not even when pushed through with adequate amounts of momentum. It seems this is more complicated than it looks.

17:10 – Fellow Brunl is telling me it is time to take a break. I will continue in a few days.

322.12.17

8:30 – I’ve had a few days to consider the complications assailing my attempts to retrieve data from within the void and I am forced to conclude that what I feared is true: the Void Sphere isn’t just a small ‘patch’ of void, it is connected to the infinity of the void itself. As the void encompasses no physical space, it has no boundaries and is infinite. This means that when I place a sphere into the void, there is no telling where it ends up. In fact, I might go as far as to suggest it ends up nowhere at all. Because of this lack of boundary or reference, it is impossible to retrieve the sphere once it is immersed within the quantum. To add a further complication, since the void also does not encompass time, anything entering the void might not just be anywhere, it might also be anytime.

In short, an item within the void is nowhere both in the sense of location and of time.

The only possible way I can imagine retrieving anything from the void is by means of holding on to it. I am uncertain if this will provide me with any useful readings, but it is worth experimenting with. I have some ideas for basic tethers which I will attempt to put into practice before adding it to a gem which is embedded to survive the void.

16:00 – I’ve created several workable tethers which should be capable of retrieving the item from within the void once it’s been completely immersed. I think the most successful of these is a harmonic chain created of both domothean and void vibrations. I’ve decided to give it a try once I’ve designed an appropriate measuring device.

322.12.18

8:30 – Obtained several nicely purified crystals, will try to work them into adequately workable measuring devices.

14:00 – I’ve embedded a large amount of sensory vibrations into the most promising crystal, using the full range of harmonic vibrations available to me. The device should now be capable of measuring temperature, pressure, location and time as well as analyse the surrounding void at a quantum level. I also embedded several consecutive layers of vibrations that might be capable of detecting any energy signatures and entities lingering within the void. I have high hopes for this piece of equipment.

16:00 – Embedded shield vibrations and tether and triple checked them for weaknesses or impurities. This thing should be good to go.

322.12.19

8:30 – Performing final round of checks before lowering yesterday’s creation into the void.

9:15 – (Editor’s note: profanity removed).

9:40 – (Editor’s note: profanity removed again).

10:00 – Right. Immediate crisis is over.

10:15 – Recording for later analysis. I had tethered my shielded device to a harmonic anchor and lowered it into the void sphere. Initial signs were positive, the tether held and the measuring device was immersed without showing signs of destabilising and disappearing into the quantum. As the device disappeared into the void however, the sphere started rippling rather violently, or perhaps it was the ward, I am unsure without properly analysing the data. Next the tether pulls tight with immense speed and energy, nearly wrenching the anchor out of its supporting station near the wall. Before I was able to properly react and recalibrate the anchor however the wards on the ground and in the conduits suddenly sprang to life and a level three warning was voiced by the supporting logic crystal. I then noticed that the void was starting to bleed out through the tether. I immediately attempted to discharge the tether but the conduits were non-responsive, probably because of the shock the anchor had to endure when the tether pulled straight. I then decided to smash the anchor, which worked, because the tether immediately broke and pulled back, losing my device in the process.

Sadly though, this did not fix the bleeding process that the tether had caused. I checked the readings and noticed a quickly-increasing instability reading within the ward. By then, the secondary wards shot into action as they were designed to and the centre of the laboratory opened up to the vastness of aetherspace into which the void sphere disappeared before destabilising altogether. I’m certain I caught the readings of the sphere destabilising, but for now I have to clear up this mess.

13:30 – The laboratory has a built-in regeneration module for the ejection centre. How convenient, I wouldn’t be surprised if this isn’t the first time this happened.

14:00 – The ejection centre has been reconstructed, but it appears it is incapable of reconstructing a new void sphere on its own. I suppose one cannot regenerate nothing. I’m reasonably sure that after all my testing and studying I possess the required expertise to use the available equipment and create a new sphere however.

19:00 – Right, it took me most of the day but I’ve succeeded. Fellow Brunl was able to assist me with some of the trickier parts and with his help, we’ve managed to set up a stable ward and place ‘nothing’ within it. After pulling the remaining vibrations from the location, we secured and embedded the sphere with harmonic void vibrations which somehow made it solidify and take on the non-existent properties that the last sphere had. It was an oddly enlightening exercise and even though today was an absolute disaster, I know that I have gathered enormous amounts of useful data.

Post script to date – The Temporal Conclave assured the continuity of the guildhall at all times, though, after a discussion about the drain and possible implications I have decided that tethering an item to the real world is too dangerous a method to employ to enter the void. I will discontinue this approach.

322.12.26

8:30 – Everything took a few days to quiet down. Going to analyse my data now.

14:00 – The readings of the void ejection are quite extraordinary. The automatic data collectors caught every detail of the events which has provided me with a richness of information beyond what I would have been able to achieve through regular testing. This is another great example that it’s not ‘Eureka!’ that really progresses science, nor is it always ‘hmm, that’s odd’ but sometimes an ‘oh bloody bollocks!’ does more than any amount of testing could.

It appears that the tether itself was the main cause of the destabilisation. The void was unable to destroy the link between the device and the anchor, and its continued presence apparently caused minute disturbances within the domothean wards. This caused the quantum to slowly destabilise to the point where it was bleeding into reality. This is proven by the discharges of energy picked up by the data collectors, caused by the quantum devouring the air with which it came into contact. The quanta of void that escaped into the surrounding environment were too insubstantial to be self-sustaining and they disappeared almost before they escaped (in some cases it is theoretically possible that they disappeared before they escaped, as per the theory of relativity and the theoretical likeliness of quanta of nothing to be capable of travelling faster than the speed of light, though sadly I have no evidence to support this theory at this time).

As the device entered the void, it was easy to tell by the way the tether behaved that the object quickly gathered speed: the force readings on the tether are almost off the scale. In fact, it is a testimony to the superiority of Hallifaxian crystal engineering that the anchor wasn’t just ripped out of its socket and pulled into the void. For such a relatively small object, the amount of acceleration that had to happen for it to produce such tremendous force upon the anchor is astounding. From this I may conclude that the device was probably almost instantly cast into nowhere, if that makes sense. Since no location exists within the void, the distance between ‘nowhere’ and the edge of the void sphere was almost instantly infinitely large. Since no time exists within the void, it is technically possible that this resulted in the object traveling the equivalent of faster than the speed of light. Interestingly, this means that the tether didn’t necessarily stop the device from moving within the void, but the part of the tether that possessed ‘mass’ (as energy = mass, it theoretically has a negligible amount of inertia) simply wasn’t capable of expanding quickly enough to keep up with the required acceleration.

And this is why I love physics.

The continued strain on the tether increased the destabilisation of the wards, causing it to slowly leak increasing quanta into the surrounding environment. I eventually managed to cut the tether, but by then the destabilisation had reached critical ‘mass’ and continued to leak. Eventually the security systems kicked in and ejected the sphere into aetherspace to minimise damage. And that’s where the readings get really interesting.

My first observation is that the aetherial portal-links to which the laboratory of the void is attached are less mundane than they appear during casual observation: the readings here indicate that they create a one-way gate to a location in aetherspace that does not conform to its prime counterpart. The region of aetherspace behind the gate is a relatively empty section in a remote quadrant, which ensures that not even the fallout of the void reaction is likely to hit anything and most certainly not the Commonwealth docks. Very clever engineering.

The readings indicate (as the visual recordings show) that the sphere was ejected into aetherspace with plenty of time to spare before any real ward failure was imminent. It appears however that the wards are triggered to deactivate under safe circumstances, so that we’re not left with a bit of void casually drifting through aetherspace leaking quantum and causing Yudhe-knows-what mayhem. In this case, the wards disabled themselves after several seconds, essentially expelling the void into the surrounding aetherspace.

The next series of effects is mostly illustrated by the visual recordings. The void sphere loses its consistency and expands outwards into the surrounding aetherspace at a logarithmic acceleration rate rather like a giant ink-blot. Interestingly, the sphere does not retain its round shape. I am unable to explain this at this point, but perhaps since the void is a quantum of nothing, it does not push and as such cannot push equally in all directions. In this case chaos would take over, which causes the void to expand in the strange black tendrils visible on the visual recordings. The void expanded at an increasing rate until it appeared to lose consistency: it is no longer pure black but instead, some semblance of reality shows through in the edges. This is a sign that the quantum inside prime is not meant to exist which causes it to destabilise. Eventually, the edges of the void disappear and become a gliding scale, meaning that reality very gradually fades into the pure blackness of the void. At this time, it is impossible to tell where reality ends and the void begins. Once this happened, the void simply disappeared: one moment, there was nothing, the next, it was filled with reality once more, this caused a large implosion as the aetherspace itself rushed in to fill the emptiness. After this, all returned to normal.

There are a large amount of secondary readings that tell me much about the reaction shown here. The sensors picked up large amounts of energy which fluctuated wildly. These are the energy components expelled by the fission of items within aetherspace as well as the aetherspace itself. The energy is not particularly large: because the void keeps expanding, it absorbs most of the energy which managed to escape the initial touch. There are two exceptions to this, the first is a medium-large energy burst right at the beginning which is caused by the void coming into contact with the platform on which the wards were mounted. The second is more interesting: it is a seriously large burst of energy, the equivalent of which could probably have powered Hallifax’ generators for a month. It took me a while to find the cause of this, which eventually turned out to be an aethership flying under the national colours of one of the less-civilised societies within the basin. In the interests of not creating an international incident I will refrain from listing the nationality and name of the aethership and simply call it ‘the drunken sailor’. The demise of the drunken sailor in this manner is a great advancement of science and I am certain that its crew would have been proud to sacrifice their lives for such a substantial contribution.

The fact that the entry of the drunken sailor into the void was accompanied by such a surge of energy clearly proves that even though algeronthine vessels encompass a certain amount of domothean energy, this is by no means strong or substantial enough to withstand the fission characteristics of the quantum. However, this display clearly shows that it is technically possible to enter the void through such a fissure as this, provided the domothean field is stable enough to persist once completely immersed within the void. This is a most astounding proof of concept that provides a possible way to enter the void in a sustainable manner.

The latter part of the void explosion within aetherspace was the degeneration of the quantum, followed by the implosion of the surrounding aetherspace. The readings here show that the re-introduction of space-time into the location where there was void before was so near instantaneous that the sensors were not capable of picking up the transfer: one moment it wasn’t there, the next moment it was. This was followed by the influx of the more common parts of reality, in this case aetherspace. This part was accompanied by tremendous forces which are impressive, but not really interesting from a quantum point of view.

The entirety of the void explosion lasted approximately 340ms (0.34 seconds) and expanded to encompass a space of approximately 40 aethereal miles. The forces at work here are almost incomprehensible in their magnitude.

Several seconds after the implosion, the aetherway gate closed itself and the laboratory started regenerating itself.

Post-script.

I have decided to limit my research for now. The amount of data and new insights gathered from the results described above will be large and possibly they will have a great impact upon the scientific community. It is necessary to properly understand these results before we are capable of continuing onwards and delve deeper into the mysteries of void- and quantum-physics.

It is my intention to analyse these results and present them in a lecture and thesis to open them up to the review of my peers. I look forward to seeing their feedback, input and conclusions. Perhaps given time, we will succeed in equalling the Elder gods in our ability to explore the vastness of the void itself.
