Fireflies by Raeri
Merit for July 2011
Some would speak of faraway lands
happily chasing childhood dreams;
Others may delve into blistering sands
in search of Tzaraziko's Hand.
But as for me, I'd much rather be
surrounded by leaves and loam -
And so I chose a path much closer to home...
one evening, as fireflies roamed.
I stumbled across a hidden, twisting path
whilst chasing fireflies that eve -
They led me past a wondrous tree of glass
(or perhaps 'twas mine eyes that were deceived?)
Suffused by a glow so furtively filtered
like tenative tendrils through the leaves -
An autumnal wind blew hither,
limned by moonlight beneath the eaves.
And so I saw it, a sight beyond compare -
set ablaze by the Waxing Moon,
Fireflies danced in the open air,
above an effulgent starry pool!
Serenity 'most palpable in the open air,
the fireflies braving Night's behest -
Oh, it wasn't at all like the Pool of Stars
in that flooded city of Celest.
This starry pool was strange indeed,
its surface ruffled by the wandering breeze -
For when I gazed into its depths,
no reflection of myself did I see!
Indeed, even the stars themselves were odd,
they seemed to meander as they please -
How very unlike their counterparts above,
unlike anything else I'd ever seen!
Into the pool there amid Isotta's Grove,
suddenly, beneath those serene eaves -
The firefly that had my steps so mislead
joined the stars there that I had seen!
Weaving an intricate, indecipherable dance
inside the opalescent glow,
The motes of light drifted as if by chance
mirrored by the fireflies above.
So what did I find on that magical night,
beneath the open, moonlit sky?
An ethereal pool filled to the brim - oh yes -
with frolicking fireflies!
