When rifts were opened during the Gorgog Invasion, dimensional parasites
were also released. This wasn't discovered for some time as the
parasites were benign to most of the populace. However, because the
brain patterns of mages were changed through their manipulation of the
elemental channels, these invisible parasites were found to swarm into
their brains, causing a variety of mental ailments. A cure was
discovered through the synthesis of opposing elements. There was,
however, an unexpected side effect of the cure, which was an enhancement
of their mental powers. From this point, some of the mages chose to
concentrate on their newly founded mental capacity and thus the
discipline of psionics were was developed. Those mages who choose the
psionic discipline went on to develop specializations of either
telepathy or telekinesis.
