Keeper Abeytu's Trial of the Water Lily by Xiran

Runner-Up for July 2021

Keeper Abeytu's Trial of the Water Lily
- From moons Klangiary to Juliary, 594 CE -

Lady Li-Varili called forth
Sea Spirit from the deeps.

So touched by red tide's bitterness,
Her daughter cries and weeps,
and drowns the Basin in sorrow.

The rivers of the Verdant Land
are filled to overflow.

What could hope to bloom between these
skies black and waters blue?

Yet Serenwilde calls upon you,
O Keeper Abeytu,
to sway fair naiad of Moon Lake.

O Keeper Abeytu, what will it be?
O Keeper Abeytu, put down your rake!

Glided as the Huntsman's iris,
or orchanet's blush-hues?

Serene as ivory bluebell,
or wake from dusk to dew,
as bewitching as the primrose?

O Keeper Abeytu, what will it be?
Says Keeper Abeytu, let's see what grows.

Greeting morning like yellow gorse,
or quiet marjoram?

Unperfumed as bold sunflower,
or heady-sweet and calm
as the lily of the Maidens?

O Keeper Abeytu, what will it be?
Says Keeper Abeytu, let's see here then.

Granted life from grave and guano
and waters sweet and tart;

Nourished by pounded shell and spoor,
while blessed by Moon-and-Hart;
What now blooms in your tender care?

O Keeper Abeytu, what will it be?
