Combat in groups

Now, I don't fight much as you all know, but I noticed something
disheartening few months ago when Daevos, Lyco, and Torak attacked
Faethorn and Aerenna (or any of the other top fighters of the Wilde)
were around to defend. There was a group of several outraged, but
inexperienced, Serens who wanted to fight back, and after a short
discussion we all agreed to follow Flacarealah and rushed out of the
archway to attack the enemy with nothing but our fury and our swords and
skills. Several of us were killed, and the rest promptly fled back into
the Ethereal Serenwilde.
I'm not blaming anyone for cowardice, of course, but now that I look
back on it, I couldn't help but think that if there was a plan of sorts,
that group would perhaps had more success at driving out the invaders.
We had an advantage of numbers, at least, and even though we may not be
as good at fighting as the guild champions, we knew how to at least deal
decent wounds and afflictions.
As the Chief of Gatherings, I propose that in addition to an annual
free-for-all, wargames should be held, too. From what I've seen - and I
emphasize that I do not fight very often, so I may be mistaken in my
impressions - few duels happen on the actual battleground. Most of the
combat occurs in groups, and with groups there are special tactics that
can be employed for greater effectiveness.
