The Necromentate by Nemetsk

Runner-Up for June 2023

Our smog was all gone.
And the sun shined so bright.
All our masters could say
Was to stay out of sight!

I lurked there with Ardrak.
In shadows that fall.
And said "Oh great Ardrak
Give me demons to call!"

To bright to go play
and too clear to go out
So we lurked in shadow
of Necropolis route

Nothing left to do then but
Lurk!
Lurk!
Lurk!
Lurk!
We did not want to lurk.
We'd much rather work!

And lo
Downstairs went Throb!
How that throb made us bob!

We gazed!
Then it was there in all of its weight!
We gazed!
Lo the brain comes!
The Necromentate!
And it said to us,
"Why doth ye lurk yon so late?"

"Knoweth how clear 'tis
Yea how sky is not foggy.
Still can have we
Much and more smog that is smoggy!"

"Know we a great plan to enact,"
Say yon brain.
"Knoweth dark Nil schemes,"
Sayeth Necromentate.
"Such dark and great schemes.
Showeth we now to ye.
Thine Council
Shan't mind terribly if we please."

Thus Ardrak and I
Know not the words to speak.
The Council was not in the plane
For the week.

Then Kunthin said "Nay! Nay!
Make yon brain hide in dream!
Tell Necromentate
Thou dost not want to scheme.
It shouldst nay dwell thus.
It shouldst nay be unchained.
It shouldst nay dwell thus
Whilst our Council abstained!"

"Lo! Lo! Feareth not.
Feareth not!" said the brain.
"Mine schemes shalt not fail,"
Say yon Necromentate.
"Aye, we may make
So much good smog, if thou wish,
With a plan that we call
Fi-fi-fi with Kunthin!"

"Let me go!" said Kunthin.
"This can not be allowed!"
"Let me go!" said Kunthin.
"Or I shalt have to howl!"

"Feareth not!" said the brain.
"We wilt not slay thee now
We wilt thrash ye around
Whilst we roll on the ground
With a tome tentacled!
And an imp on our head!
Yet that is not ALL we can do!"
Said the brain...

"Gaze at we!
Gaze at we thus!" said the brain.
"With a wight and a ghoul
On each tentacled limb!
We can hold up two imps!
We can hold up Kunthin!
And a little toy clock!
And some taint on a plinth!
And see!
We can thrash up and down on the ground!
Yet more still abounds!
Aye, yes
More still abounds...

"Gaze at we!
Gaze at we!
Gaze at we thus!
It is bliss to thrash thus
But one must know how.
We can grasp tight the wight
And the taint and the ghoul!
We can hold Ardrak's tomes!
And Kunthin on a lamp!
We can grasp the toy clock
And a little ur'Guard!
And see! With our maw
We can eat a Death Knight!
We can chew on the knight
as we thrash on the ground!
Yet more still abounds!
Aye, yes
More still abounds..."

That is what the brain said...
Till it fell on it's head!
It crashed down with a thump
From the air by the dome.
And Ardrak and I,
Wrote it down in his tome!

And Kunthin fell down, too.
He fell into a shrine!
He said, "Doth I wish this?
Hark, nay! I would not.
This be not a good plan,"
Said Kunthin in a fit.
"Nay, I do not wish it,
Nay one tiny bit!"

"Look upon thine plan!"
Said Kunthin to the brain.
"Yon Necropolis!
Glance at this! Glare at that!
Ye've crushed our toy clock,
Crushed it deep in the ghoul.
Shook Necropolis
And bent thine new lamps.
Ye should be downstairs!
Whence The Council is out!
Ye repair there at once!"
Say Kunthin in the shrine.

"Nay We enjoy hither.
Aye, we fain it as brine!
Say the Necromentate
To Kunthin in the srine.
"We shalt not go thence.
We wish not to avaunt!
Thus so," said the Necromentate,
"So
so
so...
We shalt show thee
Another good plan that we know!"

And then it fled out.
And, then, fast as a drain,
The Necromentate
Returned with some chains.

A great many chains
They wert bound with a rune.
"Assay now this scheme,"
Said the brain.
"Don't ye swoon!"

Then it held the chains up
With a bulge of it's veins.
"We name this scheme, smog-on-a-chain,"
Said the brain.
"At the end of these chains
Many beasts to be found.
Ye wilt find in them boons,"
Said the brain with a howl.

"We wilt pull on these chains
Ye shalt try them so soon.
Five beasts. And we call them
Walrus and Camel,
Parrot, Rabbit, and Snake.
They want to make smog."
So yanking the chains
Came the beasts all at once!
Lo they flew with a crash.
Then the Walrus did start
with a slash from their claws
and a swing from their tail

And Ardrak and I
Could not fathom a plan
So we lurked in the dark
While the beasts thrashed about
We closed our eyes shut.
But Kunthin said, "Nay! Nay!
Thoses beasts should not be
In this dome! Send them hence!

"They should not be loose
When the Council is out!
Slay them hence! Slay them hence!"
Said Kunthin in the shrine.

"Feareth not, poltroon Kunthin,"
Said the Necromentate.
"These beasts art good beasts."
And it gave them a slap.
"They art boons. Thou shalt see!
We have brought them to scheme.
They wilt give thee some smog
On this bright, bright, bright day."

"Now, here is a scheme that they like,"
Said the brain.
"They like to light lamps,"
Said the Necromentate.

"Nay! Not in the dome!"
Said Kunthin in the shrine.
"They should not light lamps
In the dome! They should not.
Oh, the things they wilt bang!
Oh, the guards they wilt hit!
Oh, I do not wish it!
Not one tiny bit!"

Then Ardrak and I
Saw them trample downtown.
We saw those five beasts
Bang their lamps on the walls!
Clang! Bang! Clang! Bang!
Along the streets downtown.

The Camel and Snake!
They crashed up! They fell down!
Oh the damage was done
The Warlady's statue!
Her statue with blood
And the amaranth there.
Then we saw the Rabbit
Eat the head of a guard!

Then the beasts ran about
With great leaps, bounds and howls
And with snarls and loud bleets
And all manner of growls.
And I said,
"I do not like the chaos they bring!
Should the Warlady see,
Oh, who would she swing!"

Then Kunthin said, "Hark! Hark!"
Kunthin trembled with fear.
"Warlady and Council return!
Dost thou hear?
Fi! What wilt they sentence us?
What whilst she say?
Oh, they shalt not favor
To find us this way!"

"Lo, do something! Quick!" said Kunthin.
"Dost thou hear!
I spied them. The Council!
And Warlady near!
So, as quick as ye must,
Think of some plan to do!
Ye must hurry to get rid
the beasts from the zoo!"

So as fast as I could,
I went to chant up some webs.
And I said, "With my webs
I could trap them I bet.
I bet, with my webs,
I can trap those beasts yet!"

Then I abjured my webs
They sprayed out with a plop!
And I had them! At last!
Those five beasts had to stop!
Then I said to the brain,
"Now thou do as I say.
Thou chain up those beasts
And thou take them away!"

"Alas!" said the brain.
"Thou liketh not our plan...
Alas.
        What a shame!
                 What a shame!
                          What a shame!"
Then it grasped all the beasts
and swallowed them up whole!
And the brain went downstairs.
With a sad countenance.
"That is well," said Kunthin.
"Banished underground. Aye.
But the Warlady comes!
She wilt find our skies bright!
And not a smog in sight
And the lamps and the guards,
We can not fix it all.
We'll hang in the courtyard!"
And yet!
Who returned to the dome?
Why, the brain!
"Fear not bright and clear skies,"
Said the Necromentate.
"We always uphold our ancient pact
And so...
We shalt show thee another
Great scheme that we know!"
Then we saw it fix up
All the guards that wert dead.
And the lamps, and statue,
And the taint, and the webs,
And the tomes, and the plinth.
And the knight, and the wight,
and the clock, and Kunthin.
And the smog in the sky.
Then it said, "That be that."
And then it was gone
With a grin of it's maw.
Then the Council came
And they said to us two,
"Did thou make any schemes?
Tell me. What did thou glean?"
And Ardrak and I did not know
What to say.
Should we tell them
The schemes that went on here today?
Should we tell them of it all?
Now, what should we do?
Well...
What would thou do
If the Council asked thou?
