The Story of Alarin Ka'liati by Alarin

Merit for January 2022

Alarin's earliest memory was his upbringing as a member of Mrs.
Trundle's tae'dae daycare in the village of Estelbar. It was a happy
time for him, playing with the other cubs who also called the place
home. It is said that the young panda cub was found abandoned in the
frigid area of Snow Valley, barely able to fend for himself. It was a
nomadic group of loboshigaru that found him and brought him to Mrs.
Trundle to be cared for.

When he arrived at the daycare center, he refused to speak common,
always using the tae'dae tongue to communicate with his fellow mates.
When he was finally forced to learn to speak the common tongue, his
stubbornness ensured that he would speak the language on his own terms,
no matter what anyone else said. Oh, they did try to get him to speak
properly. He wasn't having it. To him, being forced to learn something
he wasn't interested in was a grave injustice. So he persisted with his
broken common until those teaching him threw up their hands in
exasperation and finally came to terms with the fact that Alarin just
did not care. He was going to do it on his terms and nothing they did
would change his mind.

Playful and mischievous in nature, Alarin was known to play pranks on
others in the daycare. Once, he had hidden in the laundry area and
waited to pounce on an unsuspecting victim. He struck when he heard
someone quietly walk in and scared one of the other cubs so badly that the
poor sap refused to sleep unless one of the adults were with him to keep
him safe.

Another incident involved another cub being told to hide and Alarin
convincing Mrs. Trundle that the hiding cub had been kidnapped, sending
the poor woman all over the village, frantically searching for her
missing charge. Yet, no matter the prank, no one could stay mad at
Alarin for very long due to his jovial nature and welcoming spirit.

It wasn't long before Alarin reached the age of maturity, a time where
all cubs calling the day care their home would have to enter the big
world beyond the village to live life on their terms. Though he begged
and pleaded with the daycare matriarch to let him stay (he actually
attached himself to her leg and refused to let go), Mrs. Trundle would
not give in. It was her deepest ambition to see her babies one day leave
the proverbial nest and succeed in the world beyond what they knew. As
frustrating as Alarin could be, Alarin was no exception. She wanted even
more so to see him grow and be successful in whatever it was that he
decided to do.

So, pouting with a vengeance, Alarin packed his belongings and set out
into the big, scary world. He had no idea where his steps would lead
him. He just knew one thing. Wherever he found himself, his main
priority was to have fun and be happy.

"It is nice to be important, but it is important to be nice."

Those words were spoken to him as a child and, even though he pranked
people, he never took it too far andade sure everything was okay
afterwards. Even when he was being forced to learn Common, his refusals
were always polite. It would be those words that he would base his life
around. There were enough mean people in the world.

He vowed never to be one of them.
