Sweet Dreams by Yuniko

Runner Up for July 2005

I yawned as I walked to my bed. I couldn't wait to lay down. To feel the bed
shift and hold my weight. To fall into the dream world, and to find adventure.
Though, this time, I had not dreamt of risking my life for treasure. Nor was it
the usual lift of feeling free, of flying.
Instead, I found a new adventure. I was in a circle, surrounded by trees. I
dreamt of an Elfen. A male Elfen. He was more beautiful than I could ever
describe. Attempting to would have been a deep insult for him, surely. Watching
him left me speechless. His hair was long, his body was perfect. His lips, they
seemed to capture a color I could not even hope to describe. I stepped forward,
and he stepped forward.
"Who are you..?" I asked.
"Shh." He leaned into me and brushed my lips with his. Where his lips
brushed mine, there was a warm tingling sensation. Dazed, I leaned forward for
more. He only turn and walked away. Turning once to smile at me.
That morning I awoke, my lips tingling, where they had in my dream. What
had happened? Who was he? I needed more answers..I had many questions. That
night, I fell asleep earlier. Eager to dream the dream I had.
Once again, the clearing was there. The Elfen stepped out from behind a
tree. I was eager for his lips to touch mine, once more. I didn't only want it,
I needed it. Though, I hadn't forgotten.
"Who are you?" I questioned once again.
He stepped forward once again, as I stepped forward. He looked down to me.
His gray eyes held my gaze. They called to me. I stepped forward once again,
needed to be closer to those eyes. He leaned in and brushed my lips once more.
The warm tingling sensation lingering longer this time. I felt dazed, more so.
His eyes taunted me with laughter, before he turned to leave.
"No! Wait..."
He turned to look at me, his eyes questioning my interruption with what he
had planned to do next.
"Are you just a dream? Who are you?" His eyes taunted me, even more so. "Do
you..understand me?" He smiled, turned his back to me, and walked away.
I awoke, aggravated. I wanted more. I wanted the dream to come back.
Needing more of my dream, I fell asleep before the sun even set. The clearing
once again. He stepped from the trees once more.
"Who are you?" I demanded this time. Yet, his eyes captured mine, drew me
closer. He stepped forward, and I stepped forward. I was lost in those gray
eyes that seemed to hold an ocean.
He spoke. His voice, lovely. More lovely than a waterfall, more lovely than
nature. But his voice was too lovely, I didn't hear his name, I had been too
focused on listening to his voice.
"It is not yet time..." He whispered in my ear. His breath left my ear
tingling to the point of being numb. He was a perfect being.
His lips wandered yet again to mine, brushing and leaving unimaginable
sensations. He stood straight. He looked across from me, glanced at me and
smiled his perfect smile. He turned to leave. I panicked and grabbed his arm.
He looked down to me.
"Why am I here..?"
"Your time is not now." His voice. So perfect, it made me feel childish
asking questions.
Of course it was not my time. Why would I even ask? He turned away, I felt too
foolish to try and stop him again.
I awoke again. How foolish had I been to question him? Though I still had
questions...Every night I'd find myself falling asleep earlier, just to see
him. Him. Who was he? I could not remember. I could just remember the feel of
his lips on mine. I had attempted to work on guild matters, but I could not. I
had been awake only for a few hours before I decided to sleep. This dream had
taken over my life.
We were back at the clearing. He looked the same; as he had all the other
nights. He looked perfect. His steps were silent, as he walked closer to me. I
could feel his breath on my neck.
"It is time." He whispered.
"T-ti-ime?" I asked, shaking my head to clear it. I needed to think to ask
him the questions.
"You could stay here, you don't need to go back." I didn't understand.
"I don't...understand." I whispered back, not knowing why I whispered. "Are
you real?"
He chuckled. Yet, it was still in a quiet manner. He pressed his lips to
mine once again, his warmth spread from his lips to mine, and it worked its way
to the tips of my toes, and my whole body began to tingle. Every time I asked a
question, he would sweep my thoughts away, with a simple...kiss.
"You do it on purpose.." I whispered softly to myself.
His eyes caught my attention, the gray wavered. Turning red for a split
moment. Was it anger? There was only one way he could have red eyes and it...
"You are an illusion.." I gasped in realization.
He backed away. "You can have all this. The woods, the perfect silence, no
worry about guilds, or communes." His voice echoed in the quiet forest, no
longer the perfect tone it once was. "No friends to betray you, no family to
order you, no elders to tell make the laws. The forest can be yours, as could
I."
"But, there is always a but to everything." I urged him to speak. I was
anxious to hear what I had to give up for all this. And would it be worth it.
"You must not return to your home." He announced. He made it seem so
simple. But...
He was an illusionist. This was what it was because of an illusion.
"And if I refuse to give up my home?" I questioned.
"Then you will never see me again." His smirk came faster than he could
hide it.
"What..will happen to my body?" I was considering...His voice held so much
assurance. What could go wrong?
"You will sleep."
"You are a manifestation. This is just a dream, Illusionist. I will not
give my home up for a dream. You hide the truth behind this forest clearing."
His eyes held fire. Anger.
"You will return to the hurt? You will return to the orders of elders, to
do work, and the betrayal of--" His perfection wavered. His anger changed his
features.
"No!" I exclaimed, cutting him off. "The duty I am handed by my guild and
elders I do with pride. I help my guild become a better guild. Not all friends
betray. My friends would not betray me as many friends would others. Not all
friends were meant for one person, but one person is meant for others."
"You will choose to return?" He snarled.
"I will choose my duty and my life." I said sadly, the thought of leaving
my family and friends was preposterous.
"Very well. Goodbye."
"I will never you see again.." I said softly. This idea saddened me as
well. As scary as he had been when he was angered, I felt he was lonely.
He turned to face me and scoffed. "Never." he said, his voice echoing
throughout the forest, as he turned to leave. Wind blew at my hair, and
everything spun in circles. I was going to fall.
I woke up, tangled in the sheets of my bed. I decided to contact the
Moondancers, to see if they had any work for me. I ran to the door, still
dressed in my robes as I opened it. A sparkling wind blew out to the west, as I
looked out. The sun was just beginning to rise. I turned and closed the door,
returning to my bed chambers. I wept for the lonely soul stuck believing the
world was filled with pain. The manifestation who chose to sleep, and never
return to the wonderful life of joy, pain, and confusion. He turned those in,
for a world of loneliness. As I wept, I decided to take the day off. To spend
it with my family and friends.
