All right, I understand now. I'm sorry for the confusion, but it's been a long time since I've played (I've been back for like a month and a half now). I knew Ethereal connected to Prime, but I didn't realize that you could only transverse straight to Elemental if you were a Mage, or that you could transverse from the trees when you're not a part of that specific commune.
If you're only up to Teleport, you can't transverse using another nexus, since that takes the Nexus skill in Planar. Thought I'd clarify that bit before it wrought more confusion.

Bizarre guild ledger problem thing:
GMEMBERS shows the Pyromancers as having 39 novices.
GUILD LEDGER RANKS shows the guild as having 30 collegium students and 19 novices - for a total of 49 "novices".
Neither number counts dormant members.
Is my ledger showing me non-Pyromancer collegium students? Where are the extra ten people coming from? D:

Can't answer the polearm question (most historical polearms are one-handed weapons, most MUDs code them as two-handed, so best to actually hold one and test), but as for the masterweapon bit, the forging code still gives better results on master weapons.
QUOTE (Sylphas @ Apr 4 2010, 05:42 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
People used 16 foot pikes one handed? Or were you thinking of other kinds of historical polearms?
QUOTE (Eventru @ Apr 4 2010, 06:22 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hence "most." The Greeks were the masters of polearms as artisan weapons, and all of those (dory, sarissa, trident, etc.) were designed for use with a shield. Greek sarissas evolved into Roman javelins, which are one handed weapons. Early feudal conscripts who could not supply a personal weapon were typically issued a simple spear, easily used one-handed. The most common European artisan polearm, the lance, was also a one-handed weapon, based on the simple observation that polearms without shields are an invitation to get killed by someone with a more agile weapon the first time your weapon is parried.
As far as two-handed polearms go, you only see three with real use: the halberd, the pike, and the naginata. The halberd works because it solves the parry problem. The pike is not really a melee weapon -- it has to be supplemented with a better weapon, or you die after someone pushes the tip aside. The naginata is considered a woman's weapon, if that gives you any idea how the feudal Japanese feel about it.
Eventru2010-04-05 01:53:14
Aha. Well, halberds are two-handed pole-arms, which are what the Sentinels used historically.
Rika2010-04-05 02:17:35
Actually, the Greek sarissas were two handed. They had shields strapped onto their left arm.

Spartans didn't use sarissas.

Rika's right, and it's why I didn't say one-handed there. Sarissas are pikes, and when generals stopped using them in conjunction with other weapons, the formation stopped working meaningfully.

Some fun facts on polearms (in Lusternia)
Tridents are one-handed, as are lances.
Bardiches, and Halberds, are two-handed.

Is "Polearm spec coming to Lusternia" a fun fact about polearms too?
Xavius2010-04-05 05:43:58
I, for one, feel cheated that we got Templars and not the polearm-wielding Wyvern Riders of the histories.
Eventru2010-04-05 05:44:28
No.
Fun facts are things like 'Doman is annoying'.
Edit: And the Templars were wyvern riders. Gaudiguch, at that time, were the sole possessors of Beastmastery. There was probably a whole division devoted to mounted, martial combat!

Get a wyvern mount and learn some Beastmastery as a Templar and bam! Wyvern riders.

I once suggested a warrior skillset based on using the shield and a one-handed spear
But more appropriately it would be some kind of additional skillset for warriors for bashing/group combat, make a phalanx? Hopefully that will put the $$$ signs in Estarra's eyes and get some muses going, because I know I would buy it!

Actually that's Ryboi... his picture is there right next to the word annoying. Doman isn't so much annoying. He's more like... well he's Doman. I'm pretty sure he's got his own definition in the dictionary.

That's what I thought. So that means I can't go to ANY other planes until I nearly transcend Planar (without assistance)?
I'm confused again.

This sure does a lot of ego damage. Is there any way to decrease how much it does?

You can get Elementalism in Gate, or use standard planar rifts - there's one at the Lich Gate in Magnagora, with another one north (or is it south now? they had to be rewoven recently) of that one's Ethereal side to Elemental, then one south of that one's Earth side to Cosmic.

Psychicvampirism. The 5% reduction in Influence will reduce it, but it's not as bad as it looks - it's on a six-second balance, so you can sip/sparkle/scroll it up without too much trouble.
edit: Except in groups. In groups, especially of multiple TPs, it can be brutal.

There's also a rift to Ethereal in Tolborolla that everyone can use. From there you can take the elemental archways to whichever plane you want.
