I actually hadn't even thought of this, now I can't get it out of my head. Why the hell isn't he Fawn?
Kiradawea2010-02-17 02:34:18
Now that the admins are opening up for all sorts of applications, is there a snowball chance in hell that they'll bother to respond to applications?

Nobody really knows I guess!

I think Foal is possibly another name for a baby deer. I did a google of "Deer foal" and got a couple of places that call fawns foals, if you're willing to look through a few pages as you'll get several horse farms.
Shiri2010-02-17 04:01:07
Well, here would be one of those places, and I've never heard my dad (who used to write essays and reports on deer, go on about them all the time, and leave their corpses around the house a lot for the last 20 years) call one a foal, so I'm guessing they just made the same mistake.

No, but he's British. And apparently, since this is IRE, that is all you need to be a certified authority on proper wordage and spelling.

Any British English speaking/writing country, really.

foal  /foʊl/ Show Spelled Pronunciation
–noun 1. a young horse, mule, or related animal, esp. one that is not yet one year of age.
–verb (used with object), verb (used without object) 2. to give birth to (a colt or filly).
think they mean foal, of course typoing will remove all doubt
Ssaliss2010-02-17 08:07:13
Even if it is a typo, I kinda doubt they'll change it after all this time.

Here's an overly technical answer for you. That definition isn't very specific so I went and got a reliable one from the Oxford English Dictionary. Here it is:
1. The young of the equine genus of quadrupeds; properly, one of the male sex, a colt; but also used where the sex is not specified, a colt or filly.
This clarifies the bold section of the quote above. The equine genus includes horses, donkeys and zebras according to wikipedia, but not deer. In fact, deer don't even share a family-level connection with horses, belonging to the the family Cervidae whereas horses, donkeys, zebras and several related species that are now extinct belong to the family Equidae. The issue is that horses (who have foals) are odd-toed ungulates, bearing most of their weight on the third toe of their hoof, whereas deer (fawns) along with sheep, goats, cows, giraffes, pigs, camels and even hippopotami bear the weight evenly between their third and fourth toe. Genetic analysis proves this to be a heritable trait, implying that deer are more related to pigs and hippos then they are to horses, and let's face it hippos and cows definitely don't have foals. In fact, this distinction sorts them into entirely different orders (which is only one full level below mammal) and horses and deer only have a common ancestor at the level of the superorder Laurasiatheria which by the way also includes bats, dolphins, shrews and whales along with all ungulates, or hoofed mammals.
In short, I think it should be changed to fawn

I just got it back, it's classified. Presumably that means they realise it's a typo but since they would have to change a bunch of references to it in various descs and emotes they're classifying it rather than rejecting it or just fixing it instantly like they do with most typoes I report. Deer are not a "related animal" to horses, as Ssaliss says, so yeah.
Anyway hijack over. Nice catch.

Or it's turning into an event involving the tainting or wyrding of Hart.

I'll have to see if I wake up, enter the monolith and find White Cow sitting there munching grass and gazing placidly around.
