I am about to quote Real World numbers to comment on a game but...

Taking Lusternia to be say late 1600s to early 1700s (ignoring magic and Mag, who are clearly more advanced technically, for a moment) there are examples of populations in the hundreds of thousands for single cities. Granted London and Paris are definitely on the high end, but I see no reason for Lusternia to have less than a hundred thousand people in the entire Basin.

I think with the size of the basin, considering Lusternia's history, and the availability of resources it matches closer to Europe after the Black Death. So a city with 50,000 to 100,000 makes sense, villages numbering the few hundred. The Basin is still in recovery from some huge disasters.

Regarding ship proficiencies, I believe there's a cumulative cap of something around 200. I started off, after the merging of the specs, with 100/50/50 for commander/turret/empath, but after gunning a whole lot, I am now 50/100/50. It didn't shift linearly (like, 1 point off from commander and 1 point added to turret), so I think I surpassed 200 total at some point. But it's definitely staying at 50/100/50 now, regardless of how much I turret.

You know there is a cap of 100, right? So no, you won't gain more in Turret than you already have. Nor will you lose any in the others, since they will never fall below 50% once it's above that mark (or whatever the criteria was).
Razenth2010-01-19 01:43:49
But you can lose them! If you're 60/100/60, and go empath, you might end the day with like, 55/100/55.

Right. I thought that's what I said

Say I was to create an alt that grew up in an area of the Basin that was frequented by adventurers. Would it be acceptable to explain her knowledge of the Basin (which is obviously my knowledge) by saying that she frequently chatted with adventurers in her home? Or do I have to pretend like I don't know what I'm talking about in certain areas (I'm mainly talking about knowledge of current political situations, geography, planarscape, guilds and archetypes)

When your character passes through the Portal, the amount they "forget" is completely random. Brand new characters to the game naturally have "forgotten" everything, whereas the alt of an experienced character has only "forgotten" as much as that player wishes them to. You're not required to feign ignorance of general knowledge topics (ie if you can find it in a help file, a book, or by walking around).

For me, pretending I don't know would be awkward and not fun. So I wouldn't do it. I'd just keep quiet about stuff until I had been there a while. Other people might enjoy that RP though.

Do all seal bearers/medallion bearers have a custom room entrance? I've only ever seen Xiel's for nature. Or is that a True Ascendant thing?

EDIT:
Ruiku, Zallafar and Rika needs their Marked by the Seal of <> honour :3

They don't get custom room entrances I think.

Each Medallion has a unique exit message when used though, if I recall.

Correct.

And Death is the most awesome, followed by War.

Yes, you can enable the option to require approval of comments and then you will receive an email when one is made.

I managed to get the e-mails even without needing to enable approval. I forget how I did it but it's in the controls menu somewhere.

But miserable agriculture.

You forget that a huge number of residents of the basin need neither food nor drink, and don't even sleep!

As above, but also consider that Portal-borne flicker in and out of the realms, meaning they probably don't need housing of any sort, and indeed, probably only consume 1/25th (if that) the resources that a 100% full-time resident of the Basin does.
Unknown2010-01-19 20:00:36
After level 80 they don't consume any resources at all!
Aerotan2010-01-19 20:04:11
Except power, health, mana, bromides, silk, cloth, steel, iron, wood, leather, frost, fire, vitae, quicksilver, and the components therefore.
Unknown2010-01-19 20:36:57
Those aren't, like... basic living essentials. You know what I meant. :P
Aerotan2010-01-19 20:37:44
They are in Celest recently
Casilu2010-01-19 20:40:36
A small fighting population is more of a drain on the resources than an entire village. Good to know.
Unknown2010-01-19 20:50:08
I've always wondered how/why villages generate power. It's not like there's anything particularly magical about them... it's just a bunch of houses and farms and whatnot.

On the other hand, I bet if a village had kept all of its power for itself till now they could raise their own ascendants. The mountain wars would get real interesting.

It's because the power is drained from the lifeforce of the denizens and channeled through the monolith ninja.gif That's why you get less power if they've been killed.
