I can understand it being made so, was written in a way that actually made me grimace at the thought of wanting it.
This type of fungus only grows in the Mountains of Madness, and has no beneficial properties whatsover. However, earwort is the home of tiny red snails, sometimes called cochleas or cockles, which when eaten travel up the eustrachian tubes and wrap around the inner ear, telepathically passing sounds they hear to the deaf.
Mmmmm!

So what's the point of sixth sense now?
Sixthsense is supposed to remove the negative effects of blindness. So, eat faeleaf for blind+sixthsense. This protects against transfixion.
Truehearing only removes only the negative effects of deafness. Eat earwort for deafness+truehearing. This protects against bards, bellow, and barghasts.
Shryke2007-02-03 20:45:31
Aye, this change nerfs transfix, which I don't mind! And I think removing the deafness venom is very good, but we still should change the old mobs that used to give deafness as a meaningless affliction, but now as a crippling one.

Estarra was kind enough to do this already to the prime mobs that caused deafness. The only ones that cause deafness now are Astral critters (eagles, fesixes).

Should be 15 seconds to conglut (intended to give enough time to use the corpse to offer/defile/sanctify/eat/behead), and the bard death songs should be 8 seconds instead of 12 (stopped by leaving or eating earwort).

What was the point of the deafness change if there is now no way of actually giving deafness anymore? Isn't it still a defence if no one can strip Truehearing without also stripping deafness, and no one can afflict with deafness at all any more?
I mean, it was ok to get rid of deafness afflicts when deafness sucked.. but when you upgrade deafness as an affliction and then don't let anyone give it except astral mobs.. its sorta... well, I just don't get it.
I don't see how it helped bards at all. At least before, when you stripped deafness, you left the target blind. Now you don't even do that. What am I missing?

I'm surprised you of all people don't see the issue with a deafness-inducing poison. About to get instakilled by a bard? Sip deafness poison. Hit by perfectfifth? Sip deafness poison. No balance needed, it doesn't matter if you were hit by blanknote and can't eat earwort, you can still sip a poison to get deaf, and you're 100% safe from bards. You can't nerf poison sipping, since healers rely on it.

No, I understand why you can't have sippable poison.. but no one as far as I know can give deafness. What was the point of upgrading deafness as an affliction and then removing the ability to afflict with it? Why not just remove deafness from niricol and leave it a pointless affliction? It just seems odd to upgrade it and prevent anyone from giving it.. they turned it into a 100% defence. No one can strip truehearing without also stripping deafness. If you can't be afflicted with it, and the only way to really get it is via a defence.. it pretty much a defence, just like insomnia. Wouldn't you agree?

Ask Estarra. She insisted deafness without the thing that makes it a defence be a serious affliction. I don't get why either. Not really our place to ask. She really wanted it this way, so she did it this way

Sorry, had to run out while writing that post so I couldn't elaborate.
No, the point is that before, beneficial songs were worthless because everyone was always deaf. Why were they deaf? Because blind + deaf provided far, far more benefit than every beneificial bard song in the game. The Admins refused to allow beneficial songs to go through deafness (despite the simplicity and elegance of that solution), due to it being unrealistic in their eyes. So, the only solution was to make deafness less of a defence by splitting it from blind and putting in the captivate audience skill. This way, you can be protected from transfixion and still benefit from bard songs by not being deaf.
Just a few more changes are needed before deafness is where it should be... there's still the issue of it being a bit hard to relax, it being absolutely necessary in group fights vs hartstone druids or shadowdancers, since deafness is needed to protect against bellow (deafness-blocked 3sec room stun) and barghast (deafness-blocked room paralyse), and it being the only, only way out of attract (attract needs a second form of escape, imo, and gusting the attracter doesn't count since it doesn't let you actually escape for another four seconds, trivially resulting in you being stuck in the room for eight seconds if the bard times it well, which is death if the bard has someone handy to judgement/chasm/soulless you).

I'm not sure if its been changed or not, but you didn't used to have to actually escape the room to get rid of the attraction. If you gust the bard out and then try to move, even if off equilibrium, it automatically cures the attraction.
As for a second way to cure it, I've been suggesting from the beginning that gedulah/green should cure it, since it would be a power cure for a power skill, and would pretty much balance out.
As for the bit about beneficial songs, yeah, that makes sense now. Captivate all your allies then go in and they're protected from passive bard effects while still being able to be blind.
Now I just wish Daedalion would stop screwing around and giving the guild a bad name and actually work to get the Harbingers some of the love Necrosceam seems to have gotten in that last report.
