From a roleplay standpoint, is the "inner worm" considered sentient? Or is it just an energy vacuum?

I always thought it was semi sentient. Like...you can't have a conversation with it, but it isn't just an organ like your liver.

I always figured the worm was sentient as when you die it says the inner worm of blah talks to you or something like that.

Your "inner worm" is your best friend, cherish and stroke it, for it IS your soul.

Inner worm are to illithoids as the shards of Elder Gods are to other mortals. So inner worm = teensy weensy bit of Illith = your horrible, corrupt soul.

so would it be a stretch to say illithoids are snake-ish?

Edit: For some reason, I view the Illithoid as the the machines the little tiny aliens use in Men in Black 1, where the Inner Worm is the little alien controller, and the Illithoid body is the machine.

As I figure it from the "illshift" racial emote (You turn to face the corpse of a gnome, your sternal mouth opening to allow your inner worm to taste his psionic emanations.), I imagine them more like the aliens from... Alien. They're just built closer to a human structure, and no exoskeleton.
