Nightmares of Insanity: Part II Daveos, the Warlord by Ialie

Runner Up for April 2005

From his place behind the podium,
Daevos looked down amongst the crowd,
A smile played across his sneering lips,
As the citizens cheered him loud.

"NOW's the time!" he bellowed!
As he thrust his fist into the sky,
"Time to put out the waning light!"
"Tonight the Merians shall die!"

"We'll feast upon their entrails"
"As they lie dying in the streets."
"The mothers shall mourn their children"
"And we'll laugh loudly as they weep!"

"The streets will run with blood"
"And still proudly we'll march on"
"Until all the trash is trampled"
"And all traces of them gone."

"So let us go my brethren"
"And rid the lands of light!"
"Let us destroy the city of Celest"
"And make it worthy of our sight!"

Phased within the dream world,
I watched the crowd cheer and call,
Pumping their fists wildly,
As he withdrew into the hall.

Floating soundlessly I followed,
Knowing all were unaware,
That a faeling was amongst them,
Invading their sacred lair.

Had I eyes, they would have widened,
If they had witnessed what I had seen,
Daevos sharing an embrace,
With a woman behind the scenes.

Her eyes were pools of onyx,
Her skin as dark as night,
Her hair of sparkling silver,
Was reflecting candle light.

"I know that was hard for you"
She whispered in his ear,
"But you know as well as I"
"It's better than the fear."

"You know Celest would destroy us"
"Rather than live in blessed peace"
"They'd spit upon our corpses"
"As if we were beasts"

"I know, my love," he sighed
As he kissed her darkened hand,
"We only assure our safety"
"By raiding their fair lands."

My spirit must have shaken,
To see him look so sore,
Because suddenly he faltered,
And reached for his sword.

Calmly I gazed around,
Wondering who would dare,
Intrude upon the privacy,
Of this most loving pair.

Had I lips, I would have pouted,
As he put his sword away,
And pressed his hands together,
In a queer sort of way.

I waited a moment longer,
Still not knowing what was to come,
Until an indigo glow suffused him,
And filled the room with a hum.

"Ialie!" Daevos suddenly shouted
"You vile disgusting spy!"
"You have gone way too far!"
"For this you will die!"

I needed no more urging
As willed my self away.
I awoke a second later
Shaking in dismay.

"Oh gods" I whispered softly
As my face flushed in shame,
Daevos knew I was there,
And the Warlord spoke my name!
